The hand tying ritual (also known as handfasting).

Hand tying, also known as handfasting, is a ritual that dates back over 2000 years, to ancient times and is still used today in various cultural and spiritual practices. It involves the couple standing face to face whilst the celebrant or family members tie a ribbon, cord, or rope around the hands of two individuals, symbolising their union or commitment to one another.

As well as having an Irish connection, it is also where the phrase ‘tying the knot’ comes from. The practice has been used in wedding ceremonies as a way to signify the binding of two individuals in a spiritual, emotional, and physical sense. The cords used in handfasting can be made of various materials, such as silk, hemp, or cotton, and can be of different colours, each carrying its own symbolic meaning.

The tying of the knot can also involve a series of vows or promises between the individuals, further emphasising the significance of the gesture. The handfasting ceremony can be tailored to fit the beliefs and preferences of the couple, allowing for personalization and creativity in the process.
